SILCHAR: After 55 long days, the Gammon bridge on Tuesday was reopened after a thorough renovation. Ministers Krishnendu Paul and Kaushik Rai, MP Kanad Purkayastha, along with top officials from the district administration as well as the NHIDCL were present in the reopening ceremony.

Meanwhile, the Cachar district administration clamped down on overweight and modified vehicles crossing the Gammon bridge, citing urgent concerns over the ageing structure’s safety and integrity.

An official order issued on Tuesday warned that no vehicle exceeding 40 tonnes would be allowed on the bridge from July 19 and all unauthorized body modifications on vehicles using the route would be strictly barred. Officials described the move as ‘imperative’ to prevent any untoward incident and preserve the vital artery of Silchar’s road network.

To enforce the restrictions, joint checkpoints would be set up at Digarkhal on NH-06 and at Dolu on NH-27, near their respective toll gates. These will be manned by police, transport department officials, and executive magistrates working in shifts round-the-clock, with duty rosters already being prepared.

Violators will face strict penal action under the Disaster Management Act and other applicable laws, the order warns.

The Gammon Bridge , a critical link for commerce and commuters, had already undergone repairs earlier in 2025 after signs of stress and damage. Officials are keen to avoid any repeat of last year’s disruption, when cracks on the structure forced a partial closure for weeks.
