Sipajhar Violence Case: 14 Day Judicial Custody for Photographer Bijoy Shankar Baniya

GUWAHATI: Bijoy Shankar Baniya, main accused in Sipaijhar clash has been sent to 14 days judicial custody. CID has registered a case against him under Case No 8/2021.

The Sipajhar clash had taken place on September 23 when at least 2 protestors had died due to police firing. In addition, 9 police personnel have been injured after they were attacked by the protestors with sticks and other weapons.

Photographer Bijoy Shankar Baniya was seen jumping and attacking an incapacitated protester who later died has been arrested by the state police on Thursday evening and was in Assam CID's custody.

The BJP-led Assam government has been facing severe backlash from the Assam Congress after the eviction drive in Sipajhar escalated to a massive clash between the protestors and the police.

To facilitate a 'transparent inquiry' the Assam Congress MP Ripun Bora has demanded the immediate transfer of the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police of Darrang district.

Congress MP Ripun Bora also highlighted the fact that the Superintendent of Police of Darrang district is none other than the brother of the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Bora suggested that the relationship between the brothers may come in the way of a 'transparent' inquiry process.

The deputy leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha and Assam MP Gaurav Gogoi also tweeted about this issue and said, "The Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's own brother is the Superintendent Police of the Darrang district where the barbaric violence took place. It is clear that this CM-SP duo did not want a peaceful resolution to the eviction drive. The CM continues to bring shame to Assam."

During the protests photographer Baniya was stopped by police personnel, however, he returned to attack the severely wounded protestor once again.

In the viral video, the protester looked unconscious, but reports and later it was confirmed that the protester have succumbed to his injuries.
