Six arrested for witch-hunting in Biswanath Chariali

Biswanath Chariali: Police rushed to Diring Bagan under Balichang police outpost on Monday night and rescued one Ursila Lohar. They took her to Biswanath Chariali PS and sent her for medical examination following attacks on her.

According to information, some local tea garden women had gathered in the house of one Salmina Sanga (30), wife of Alecres Lenda of Diring Bagan village, Line no. 2 under Balichang Outpost under Biswanath Chariali Police Station in Biswanath district. They then surrounded Ursila Lohar (40), the wife of Rameshwar Lohar of the same village. They alleged that Ursila Lohar was responsible for the frail health of Salmina Sanga and called her a witch. They also demanded her to cure Salmina Sanga. Further, some of the women physically assaulted Ursila Lohar and she received injuries. Subsequently, Ursila Lohar lodged an FIR on Tuesday and accordingly registering a case under the proper section of the law, police started an investigation. As part of the investigation, the accused women - Puja Bawri (24 ), Bobita Brikkhi ( 25), Sabitri Sanga (45), Sinaki Bawri (27), Bholenchiya Bhengra (23) and Anita Sanga (35) were arrested by police. Anita had allegedly led the mob.
