DOOMDOOMA: Terming snake bite as a preventable accident, Dr Surajit Giri, a renowned community doctor of Demow Model Hospital for snake bite, said that without snakes our longevity would have been only 19 years. Narrating various instances of snake bites, he said that early hospitalization of patients can ensure survival of the patients. Among the snakes, only four varieties are venomous, he said.
He pointed out that one should not tie the wound with clothes or wash it or move the wounded part.
Dr Giri was addressing a symposium on ‘Snake bite and its remedy’ organized by Ellora Vigyan Mancha (EVM), Doomdooma Branch, on the occasion of its fourth biennial conference. Dr Ashma Ghaznavi, SDMO & In-Charge of Doomdooma 30-Bedded FRU Hospital, was its coordinator. Dr Ghaznavi said that antivenom injections were now available in most of the hospitals.
EVM’s daylong programme began with hoisting of the flag by President Dr BK Ghosh followed by smriti tarpan by Working President Jhikananda Borgohain. In the delegate session held under the presidency of Dr BK Ghosh, Secretary Advocate Tarini Deka read out the secretarial report and statements of accounts which were duly passed by the house. In the beginning, a one-minute silence was observed in memory of the victims of Air India’s recent plane crash and others who died during its last tenure.
A new executive committee was elected with Dr BK Ghosh as President, Pona Bora as Working President, Romi Hazarika as Secretary and Noni Deka as Treasurer.
