SOOTEA: Since time immemorial, even in the days of Mahabharata, the great heroes from Kamrupa - now Assam- have hardly got their due recognition. The mighty warrior Ghatotkach- the son of Bhim and Hirimba - is also not an exception.
Reflecting it on the stage on the basis of the poem Ghatotkach by Rafiqul Hussain, script writer and director of repute, Pankaj Jyoti Bhuyan, with the participation of the artistes of Sootea Natya Samaj, successfully mesmerized the jam-packed audience at Sootea Natya Bhavan on Thursday evening for two hours with the excellent performance of the drama Ghatotkach. All the artistes were appreciated for their mannerism, delivery of dialogue without depending much on the prompter and acting.
Sootea legislator Padma Hazarika, known for his recitation and theatrical performance since his student days, made his presence felt on the stage after a long gap of 22 years by performing the role of Duryodhana of the Kouravas. Keeping his theatrical performance intact, he was successful in giving a new taste of performance in the royal attire to the dilettantes.
Veteran actor Debananda Saikia, portraying the role of Shakuni Mama, reminded the audience of the cunning nature of the Gandhar Prince who seeks revenge for the killing of his father. Arup Jyoti Borah played the lead role of Ghatotkach while Kumkum Barua's role as Hirimba- the deserted wife of Bhim- was up to the mark. Dr Alekhya Barua's excellent depiction of the role of Krishna made the audience spellbound.
Other performers, namely Gargi Kalita as the blind-folded queen Gandhari, Chayanika Barua as Ahilawati, Ranjit Hazarika as Bhisma, Jayanta Barua as Sanjay, Pinku Gayan as Karna, Manas Bora as Arjun also contributed to make the play a memorable one in the Sootea area. The young members Wushu Machineries of Sootea won a lot of appreciation for their display of martial arts while taking part as the soldiers in Mahabharat. The significant point to note besides their excellent theatrical performance, was the punctuality maintained by the organizers.
