DOOMDOOMA: Contrary to common knowledge that the river Brahmaputra originates from Manasarovar as Tsangpo in Tibet, subsequent satellite imagery has proved that it was from Chemayundung glacier above Manasarovar where from the river actually originated. This was stated by River expert Dr Jogendra Nath Sharma, a former Keshabdeo Malabya Chair Professor of Applied Geology Department, Dibrugarh University (DU) while delivering a Commemorative Lecture organized by Assam Science Society, Doomdooma Branch, in memory of its founder President Phatik Chandra Baruah at Hoonlal HS School auditorium as chief speaker today.

Dr Sharma explained the entire course of the river Brahmaputra from Tibet to Bangladesh which is recognized as the largest braided river of the world. On the construction of a big dam on the mouth of the Brahmaputra by China, Dr Sharma said that it was not going to pose any problem to us on distribution of water as 80 percent of the water of the river is provided by the different tributaries of the river in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh as against only 20 percent of it by the Chinese side. However, he cautioned that the proposed mega dam, that the Chinese Government had undertaken to construct on the course of Tsangpo, might be used by the Chinese as a ‘water bomb’ to great destruction of its downstream area.

In the beginning, Professor Nirode Baruah, Vice- Chancellor, Majuli Cultural University, paid tribute in the memory of his late father Phatik Chandra Baruah who took great pain in upgrading the Hoonlal High School to Higher Secondary stage in 1985 and spoke briefly about his father’s zeal for learning, who besides being a double MA in English in literature and language, did MA in Political Science from Gauhati University (GU) and thereafter PhD from DU after retirement from the school.

The programme, which began with President Dr Meena Devi Baruah in the Chair, was attended by Dr Paramananda Mahanta as chief guest. While exhorting the students for development of scientific temper, he expressed the apprehension about the ill effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and lack of people-to-people contact due to virtual communication through mobile phones.

Before the starting of the meeting, a one minute silence was observed in the memory of Dr Anil Kumar Goswami, Ex-President, Assam Science Society and former principal, Cotton College.

The meeting was also attended by Dr Amarjit Saikia, Principal, Bir Raghav Moran Government Model College and addressed by Dr Kamaleswar Kalita, Principal, Doomdooma College and Dr Thanuram Majinder Baruah, Principal, Padmanath Gohain Baruah Government Model College, Kakapather.

Dhiren Deka, Secretary, explained the objectives of the meeting and introduced Dr Nirode Baruah who attended the function as guest of honour. Similarly, life members of the branch Runumoni Dutta Bhuyan and Prakash Dutta introduced Chief Guest Dr Paramananda Mahanta and Dr Jogendra Nath Sharma, Chief Speaker of the commemorative lecture respectively.

The two- day long biennial conference came to an end with today’s open session-cum-commemorative lecture. In its general body meeting held yesterday at Doomdooma Natyamandir, a new 17-member executive body was elected for 2025-2027 with Dr Meena Devi Baruah as President, Jhikananda Borgohain as Working President, Dhiren Deka as General Secretary, Utpal Pujari as Joint Secretary, Runumoni Dutta Bhuyan and Rubi Chaudhury as Assistant Secretaries and Arjun Baruah as Treasurer.
