Street plays raise environmental awareness across Sonitpur on World Environment Day

TEZPUR: In observance of World Environment Day 2025, the Cultural Affairs Department, Government of Assam, in collaboration with the Forest Department and Sonitpur District Administration, organized a series of street plays across five Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) in Sonitpur to raise mass awareness on pressing environmental issues.

The play, titled ‘Nodir Axukh’ written by playwright Pankaj Jyoti Bhuyan, focused on key themes such as climate change, deforestation, plastic pollution, biodiversity loss, and the need for sustainable conservation efforts. This daylong public engagement programme reached audiences across Tezpur, Rangapara, Barchalla, Dhekiajuli, and Naduar LACs.

In Tezpur LAC, the performance at Court Chariali was inaugurated by MLA Shri Prithiraj Rava, in the presence of District Commissioner Ankur Bharali, ADC Kabita Kakati Konwar, and other officials. Rava emphasized a holistic approach to environmental protection, while DC Bharali highlighted this year’s theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ and urged everyone to reduce plastic use, especially single-use plastic, both in official capacities and in personal life.

In Rangapara LAC, the play was staged in Rangapara town, graced by MLA Krishna Kamal Tanti, ADC Twahir Alam, and other officials. For Barchalla LAC, the performance took place at Garubandha (Missamari), in the presence of MLA Ganesh Kumar Limbu, Circle Officer of Thelamara Himandri Bora, and other officials.

For Naduar LAC, the play was staged at Jamuguri town, attended by Chairperson of Jamuguri Municipal Board Pallabita Sarmah Mahanta, CDC of Naduar Manash Saikia, and other dignitaries. In Dhekiajuli LAC, the event was held in Dhekiajuli town, with the participation of officials of Dhekiajuli Co-District Office and other concerned officials.

In addition to the performances, the Forest Department distributed seedlings to the public to promote afforestation and community participation in green initiatives. The street plays were brought to life by two cultural troupes.
