On Wednesday night, a lot of students in Cotton University were left injured after post-poll violence between two teams. Abhishek Mahanta was elected as general secretary and Niyor Deka as President.

GUWAHATI: A number of students of Cotton University were left with injuries after a massive fight that took place between two groups of students following the general elections in the university.

The two teams participated in the Cotton University Students Union Election (CUSU) as opponents and the clash occurred mainly between hostellers of Mahendra Nath Deka Phukan (MNDP) Hostel and SNBC new boys' hostel of the Cotton University.

The city police reached the spot soon after getting informed about the post-poll violence and attempted to stop the fight to bring the situation to normal.

On being unable to bring the situation under control, police officials turn to lathi-charge as informed by sources. The lathi-charge initiated by police has resulted in many students getting injured including other staff of the university. It was also reported that students even pelted stones on police during the fight.

Those who got severely injured throughout the big brawl out were later admitted to GMCH (Guwahati Medical College Hospital) for medical therapy and currently undergoing treatment.

The general elections of Cotton University went smoothly which resulted in forming a new student body. Students were participating peacefully before the post-poll incident but the situation turned worst after the fight that broke out on Wednesday during the night hours.

The Cotton University Students Union elections were held on Tuesday 4 January and the results were declared on Wednesday 5 January.

The post of General Secretary of CUSU (Cotton University Students Union) Election is bagged by Abhishek Mahanta who is a member of SMSS (Satra Mukti Sangra Samiti). Abhishek won the post of GS by a total of 356 votes and successfully gathered a total of 1356 votes.

However, female candidate Heena Deuri has won the post of Vice president and Niyor Deka of ACP has won the important post of President in the Cotton University Students Union Election (CUSU). The AGS (Assistant General Secretary) of the university is now Jumi Gogoi.

In the general election held in Cotton University, a number of 45 candidates contested in 16 different posts. The percentage of students who turn out to vote is recorded as 58.03% according to reports.
