SARUPATHAR: Agitated over the poor condition of the Sarupathar-Golaghat road, the regional unit of AASU along with some other student activists of Dhansiri subdivision in Golaghat district staged a two-hour Sarupathar-Golaghat road blockade on Monday at Barpathar town.
The activists raised slogans against the PWD and district administration for their ‘failure’ to repair the road. Demanding immediate repair and black-topping of the road, they also blocked the Sarupathar to Golaghat roadways. The protesting students also said that due to the poor condition of the road, they get late in reaching the school and in the rainy season mini buses do not ply on the road so they have to miss school.
“Despite manifold problems faced by us, there has been no action by the district administration and PWD authorities to repair and improve the road,” lamented. Some locals of Barpathar and the adjoining area also joined the demonstration and threatened two-hour protest in the heart of Barpathar town on Monday.
On the other hand, recently, the Chutia Students’ Union of Dhansiri subdivision also staged an indefinite protest in front of the PWD office at Sarupathar, Podumoni against the PWD and CCL company and demand immediate repair of the road from Sarupathar to Uriamghat.
Moreover, according to report, a company of Hyderabad named CCL (Continental Coffee Limited) had constructed the 19-km road from Silonijan to Sarupathar last year and the construction of the road was initiated at an estimated cost of Rs 21 crore. But the roads of Dhansiri subdivision are in a poor condition.
