ORANG: In a remarkable initiative to revive and promote Assam’s rich cultural heritage, the Directorate of Cultural Affairs under the Government of Assam launched 15-day summer cultural workshops across various legislative constituencies of the state. In Udalguri district, the programme is being implemented with precision and enthusiasm by the District Cultural Tour Division, in collaboration with eight voluntary organizations.
The summer workshop, running from early to late July, aims to connect the new generation with their traditional roots through active participation in local art forms. The initiative spans four constituencies Mazbat, Udalguri, Bhergaon, and Tangla with two training centres established in each, making it a district-wide cultural movement.
According to Saurav Kalita, Cultural Development Officer, Udalguri, “The summer workshop is not just an extracurricular programme but a journey into the soul of Assam’s diverse culture. Students are engaging in folk songs, dances, drama, and sculpture activities that shape both personality and pride in heritage.”
In Mazbat constituency, a folk song workshop is being held at Lamabari Middle English School (July 7 to 21), supported by Samanway Manch Assam. Concurrently, Rauta Music College of Art & Culture is organizing a modern dance workshop at Joybhadra Hagjer Memorial High School, drawing energetic participation from students.
In Udalguri constituency, Sanjarang Art & Culture Centre is conducting an art and sculpture workshop at the District Teachers’ Association Auditorium (July 9 to 23). Alongside, Rumbang Cine & Theatre is hosting a folk dance workshop at Bagariguri Jwngser Youth Club Hall (July 8 to 22), encouraging cultural expression through traditional movement.

Simultaneously, Dapon the Mirror is overseeing a drama workshop at Black Hole Theatre Studio, with both programmes running from July 7 to 21 and receiving an enthusiastic response from young learners.
The initiative is part of a state-wide effort covering all 126 legislative constituencies of Assam, aiming to integrate cultural literacy with academic growth. Students are not only learning new skills but are also being sensitized to the vibrant folk traditions of their communities. The workshops are helping them explore the creative aspects of identity, expression, and history.
“These sessions ensure that while academic learning continues, our future generations remain rooted in their cultural soil,” added Kalita.
The initiative has been lauded by parents, educators, and cultural leaders across the district. With enthusiastic participation from hundreds of students, the workshops are proving to be a landmark cultural intervention by the Assam Government.
