Tata Sumo catches fire after head-on collision with dumper in Golaghat

Numaligarh: A road accident took place on Wednesday night at NH-39 near Saror gaon area of Morangi in Golaghat district. According to reports, a Tata Sumo vehicle (AS-01-AJ- 0401) carrying a total of six persons collided head-on with a dumper (NL-05-G-1049). Both the vehicles caught fire immediately after the high speed collision. Before the fire engulfed the vehicle extensively, locals of the area did a commendable job and managed to bring out five injured persons from the burning Sumo. Unfortunately, one person was trapped inside the vehicle and was burnt to death on the spot. While the Sumo was fully engulfed in flames, the dumper was burnt partially.

Fire tender service and police reached the spot after being informed and managed to douse the flames of the vehicles. According to reports, the six persons inside the Sumo were part of a special team of the Excise department from Guwahati. The team was camping in Golaghat district since the last few days and was carrying on some special investigation against illicit liquor. There are also some inputs from sources that they were enroute to Jorhat for some special investigation on Wednesday night when this unfortunate incident happened, claiming the lives of three members of the excise team.

Police sources stated that the two persons who died on the spot were identified as Samu Maibongsa and Ramen Borjhang while another injured- Harekrishna Kumar - died in JMCH later. Another two persons with grave injuries- Jahidul Hoque and Tonu Injal - were taken to GMCH for better treatment and another member of the team, Rahul Singh is under treatment in JMCH. Samir Garh, the accused driver of the dumper has been arrested by Golaghat police on Thursday evening.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has announced a probe into the incident by Upper Assam Commissioner Juri Sonowal and has directed to take all necessary steps for the treatment of the injured.
