DIBRUGARH: Retired doctor Bhaskar Bora has been an inspiration for those who have lost hope in their lives. Dr Bora, through his dedication and never-say-die attitude, changed his life from one of hopelessness to one where he is an inspiring figure.

On July 17, 2019, Dr Bhaskar Bora attended what he thought would be a relatively minor operation, but soon faced complications that would change his life forever. Bora penned a book ‘The Second Chance in Life,’ which is a testament of his struggles.

“The book is a memoir which shares my personal journey through significant life challenges. I sustained a spinal cord injury in 2019, resulting in my inability to walk.

I have also been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, leading to extended hospital stays and retirement from a successful medical practice. I experienced profound loss and mental health struggles such as depression and grief. But suddenly, I realized a few things and penned a book ‘The Second Chance in Life’ which became a bestseller in 27 countries,” said Dr Bhaskar Bora. The book is also available in Assamese, titled ‘Jibanar Ditiyo Khuj,’ for those preferring to read in their native language.

“Never give up; focus on what you can control rather than mourning what you cannot. Encourage open discussions about feelings of depression and hopelessness. Feeling depressed is a common human experience and it is important to speak out rather than suffering in silence, especially for men who may find it harder to communicate,” he added.

“I qualified as a doctor in 1999 and had been working in the NHS in the UK as well as been an entrepreneur with a hospitality, real estate, and medicine business. In July 2019, following an operation, I sustained a severe spinal cord injury leading to paralysis from waist down, and have been left permanently disabled. While I was just getting used to my ‘new normal,’ I got diagnosed with cancer of the thyroid for which I had to have further surgeries,” he said.
