Three Injured in leopard attack at Jorhat District

JORHAT: BSF jawan Ram Kekh, forest guard Nikibur Zaman and a resident of the area, Nitu Bora (37) were attacked by a stray leopard in Doah-Gayan Gaon towards north-west Jorhat under Pulibor Outpost of Jorhat Forest Division in Jorhat district, said forest officials. The female leopard got trapped inside the house of one Biswajit Gayan of the area. The forest personnel and police could not find any way to cage the leopard. Jorhat Divisional Forest Officer Darvinder Suman requested officials from Wildlife Trust of India’s Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation based at Panbari, Kaziranga National Park to help them. After the arrival of the team, they tried to tranquillize the big cat but missed twice. The leopard somehow managed to get out of the house attacked forest guard Nikibur Zaman and BSF jawan Ram Kekh. Both were rushed to JMCH.

Nitu Bora, who was seriously injured by the stray leopard, was taking a bath near Biswajit Gayan’s residence. Nitu’s condition is serious, said Dr Manab Narayan Baruah, the Deputy Superintendent of JMCH.

This is the fourth stray leopard suspected to have come out from Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, said Tonkeswar Gayan, a forest official.
