Tinsukia Branch of IMA Observed Dr Bhubaneswar Baruah's Birth Anniversary

TINSUKIA: The Tinsukia branch of Indian Medical Association (IMA) observed the 126th birth anniversary of Lokabandhu Dr Bhubaneswar Baruah with the unveiling of his bust at the premises of IMA House on Wednesday. The bust was formally unveiled by Dr Satyajit Borah, the State president of IMA in the presence of leading physicians of the district. Dr Bhubaneswar was born in 1893 at Sadiya. September 4 is observed as 'Lokabandhu Day' after the IMA, Assam Chapter in its Tinsukia session in 1999 resolved to observe the birthday of this great physician who was a humanitarian, philanthropist socialist, Gandhian, sports organizer, freedom fighter and social worker and instrumental in building up institutions like Gauhati University, Assam Medical College, Ayurvedic College, Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi TB Hospital, Kasturba Ashram, Dumb and Deaf School, Srimanta Sankar Mission and Assam Mother and Children Welfare Centre.

Observing the day, a meeting was organized at IMA House which was chaired by Dr Anil Borkakoty, president of the Tinsukia branch of IMA. The programme was moderated by Dr Prashant Agarwal, the secretary of the branch. In his speech as chief guest, Dr Satyajit Borah said the medical fraternity was passing through very critical times, particularly in the aftermath of the inhuman killing of Dr Deben Dutta. It was now left to the society to show the path so that doctors could discharge their duties fearlessly with dignity and honour. "We are not in favour of any agitation nor do we expect any reward from the government but the government and other organizations should create a conducive atmosphere for us to work," Dr Borah said. Other speakers highlighted the contributions of Dr Bhubaneswar Baruah. Noted sculptor Biren Singh, who created the bust, was felicitated on the occasion.
