TINSUKIA: In a significant milestone for Assam's Tinsukia district, the Barekuri Parivesh Unnayan Samiti has received the prestigious Asom Gaurav Award for its remarkable work in the conservation of the endangered Hoolock Gibbons in Barekuri. The award is a testament to the efforts of the community-based initiatives undertaken by the Samiti to protect the sole ape species found in India.

The award is likely to raise awareness about wildlife conservation and promote eco-tourism in the area, highlighting the need to conserve local biodiversity. The Hoolock Gibbons, which have distinctive calls and social habits, are an important component of the ecosystem in Assam.

Diplab Chutiya, President of the Barekuri Parivesh Unnayan Samiti, expressed deep appreciation for the recognition, extending gratitude to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Assam government. He stated, “This recognition will inspire more efforts towards preserving Barekuri’s unique biodiversity and strengthen our commitment to environmental protection.”

Besides recognising Samiti's endeavors, the award acts as an encouragement for others to embrace activities for conservation. Because the area is yet to overcome environmental concerns, the recognition is significant in shaping a culture of sustainability and environmental conservation among the people.

The Asom Gaurav Award is a prestigious award conferred by the Government of Assam to individuals and organizations that have contributed significantly to the development of Assam and its cultural heritage. It aims to bring welfare to society and nature conservation, rewarding individuals dedicated to improving life in Assam.
