Tiwa Autonomous Council(TAC) Polls 2020: Voter turnout at 58% till 1:30pm

Tiwa Autonomous Council(TAC) Polls 2020: Voter turnout at 58% till 1:30pm

Morigaon: Voting is taking place for the Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC) election 2020 in Assam amid tight security and by following Covid-19 protocols. Till 12 noon the voting percentage has reached 35 per cent.

Voting is underway for 35 council constituencies (total constituencies are 36. One constituency – Gubha constituency No 14 has been declared uncontested) in parts of Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai and Kamrup (Metro). Queues were seen since early morning in the polling booths as voting began at 7.30 am and will continue till 4.30pm.

A total of 124 candidates are in fray and a total of 3,08,409 voters will decide the fate of the candidates in ballot papers. According to the Assam State Election Commission, as many as 410 polling booths have been set up.

BJP is contesting in 35 council seats. Its ally party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is contesting one seat. Congress is contesting all 36 seats.

Counting of votes will be held on December 19.

All eyes are particularly on the Damal constituency where the fight is between current Chief Executive Memeber of Tiwa Council Paban Manta, a BJP candidate and AGP candidate Niraj Bordoloi.

Another key contest is in the No 18 Charipunia Chabukdhara constituency where the tussle is between Morigaon MLA Rama Kanta Deuri's son and BJP candidate Madan Deuri and Congress candidate Dulal Deuri . The No 18 Charipunia Chabukdhara constituency is also home town of Rama Kanta Deuri.

Voting is also taking place in Digmoria, Digaru, Ampri, Sonapur, Khetri and Phong Ari.
