Morigaon: The 13th triennial central conference of Tiwa Mathanlai Takhra (Tiwa Sahitya Sabha) commenced on Friday at Late Jemon Chandra Bardoloi Khetra, Oujari, amidst much enthusiasm. The main gate of the conference was inaugurated by Dipshing Deoraja, the King of the historic Gova Kingdom of the Tiwa people. Dr. Bidyut Bikash Senapati, general secretary of Tiwa Mathonlai Takhra, officially inaugurated the event, while Morigaon MLA Ramakant Deuri inaugurated the ‘Barghar.’ Later, Minister Piyush Hazarika inaugurated a grand exhibition at the venue, which includes a fair showcasing Tiwa costumes and ornaments.
A key highlight of the first day was the release of the memorial book Charang, the Tiwa-language newspaper Thurang, a Tiwa language dictionary, and about forty books reflecting the language and culture of the community. The afternoon also featured a delegates’ meeting and an engaging beauty competition, followed by a vibrant cultural programme in the evening.
The second day of the conference will witness two significant seminars—one on ‘The Role of Tiwa Women in Preserving the Heritage of Tiwa Traditional Dresses’ in the morning and another on ‘The Role of the Younger Generation in the Upliftment of Tiwa Language and Literature’ in the afternoon. A poetry fair, a performance of the historical Barat Puja, and a cultural programme will also take place.
On the final day, the conference will continue at Late Jemon Chandra Bardoloi Khetra, where Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma is expected to attend. The venue features symbolic representations of Tiwa culture, including structures like Chamadi (Dekachang), Nobar (Barghar), Tangikhar, Marghar, Owakda (pig pen), and Tukda (chicken pen). A grand statue of Bir Jongal Balhu, a revered Tiwa hero, has been installed under the supervision of renowned artist Mani Bardoloi. The session was attended by 85 Sakha committees of the central literary body from about 10 districts of the state as well as representatives from neighbouring Meghalaya.
The event is set to conclude with the formal appointment of Sahitya Akademi awardee and Tiwa language researcher Harching Khalare as the newly elected President of the Tiwa Sahitya Sabha for the upcoming term.
