TINSUKIA: After Tinsukia division of State PWRD undertook construction of a road divider on a congested GNB Road- a major arterial road in Tinsukia town- various organizations, trading community and media questioned justification of having a road divider without considering pros and cons of public inconveniences vis-à-vis traffic movement even as the Tinsukia Municipal Board (TMB) permitted car parking and vendors to operate their business on either side of the road divider.

The Executive Engineer of PWRD, Manarajan Saikia contended that as the road belonged to PWRD, the TMB had no right to issue permission for car parking, which the TMB had been doing since ages. But the question arises is why the PWRD had not raised objection to the revenue collection earlier, which PWRD now claims to be an illegal act? The PWRD allegedly took the decision arbitrarily without assessing the ground realities. Saikia, however, affirmed that the divider was placed primarily on the safety point of view, though mystery shrouds after some portions of the road were left without any divider.

The TMB was utilizing the Dak Banglow premises for dumping of their heavy vehicles, which it was supposed to vacate after completion of their building but still it is using the premises even as decisions were taken at administration level on several occasions. As the core issue is revolving around parking of vehicles- cars on right side and e-rickshaws on the left side in Thana Chariali, besides parking and vendor issue on the entire GNB Road, the organizations demanded immediate intervention of the Deputy Commissioner to resolve the crisis. The Vishal Shopping Complex added additional traffic chaos as it had no parking slot for its own vehicles.

As the proposed road divider would be laid on the entire stretch of GNB Road from Thana Chariali to Chirwapatty crossing, there will be serious traffic problems not only to GNB Road but also to all roads connected to Chirwapatty crossing unless sorted out now with proper road and traffic management policies.
