Tribute to Chandra Nath Bhattacharyya

Our beloved deuta, Chandra Nath Bhattacharyya bid his final adieu and left for his heavenly abode on April 30 at the age of 82 years. Difficult to pen down his thoughts, a larger-than-life personality, he was a man who left a lasting impression on anyone who met him even once. He was known for his loud laughter and a generous heart and the values he inculcated amongst us reverberated the importance of close-knit families and cherishing every small joy in life.

Born in a renowned family of Baihata Chariali in Kamrup district, he spent most of his childhood life at his maternal uncle's home in Guwahati after his mother's demise at the age of three. Following his graduation from the prestigious Cotton College in Guwahati he started his career with a short stint in teaching at Arya Vidyapeeth College, and further had a successful career with Indian Oil Corporation and Kuwait National Petroleum Corporation spanning almost four decades. He retired as a Senior Production Manager from IOCL, Guwahati.

An avid storyteller, he used to share a lot of real-life incidents with his family and friends, especially how they had to evacuate from Kuwait during the Gulf war with tremendous difficulties and meticulous planning using difficult routes through a third country. With a generous and big heart, he had travelled to Saudi Arabia during those days to bring religious gifts for his close friends back home in Assam.

However, following his retirement, life took a cruel turn and he had to fight a new battle due to his chronic illness for a prolonged duration of time. It was a test of his grit and fortitude. He came out valiant albeit fragile in health. Finally, it was time for him to move on to God's abode leaving a huge void in our lives. But the light that was kindled in all of our hearts including his well wishers will continue to carry forward his legacy and spread goodness in the world. He leaves behind his wife, four daughters, son, daughter-in- law, two sons-in-law and grand children. His Adya Shraddha will be performed on May 10.
