GUWAHATI: Two elephants were killed by a train in Khetri, Assam's Kamrup Metro district, in a tragic occurrence. The elephants collided sideways, and a speeding Rajdhani Express slammed with them.

On November 30, Tuesday night, at 10 PM the event occurred on the rails at Khetri's Barahu railway station, around 44 kilometres from Guwahati in Assam. The two elephants were said to have ventured out in search of food, the official said

According to the preliminary report by the locomotive driver, the elephants collided sideways with the engine. The driver had reported the death of one elephant and injury to another. Later, it was informed that both died," it added.

They came across railway tracks while hunting for food and were hit by a train, which was later identified as a Rajdhani Express.

Forest officials, on the other hand, have arrived on the scene. They notified the railway police, who conducted a post-mortem after which the two tuskers were buried at a prescribed location.

Locals from the area have gathered to pay their respects to the tuskers that have died. Locals have mentioned that a herd of elephants passes through the area on a regular basis in quest of food.
