Two Govt Officials Detained by Police for Link to PMAY Scam

GUWAHATI :Two government officials have been arrested for alleged involvement in the housing scam under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY). The incident took place in Salbari in the Baksa district. The accused has been identified as Mozammel Hussain, the Block Development Officer and the other as Wajed Ali Ahmed, a junior engineer during the scam.

Mozammel Hussain is a retired government official and Wajed Ali  is currently posted as the assistant engineer of Barigog Forest Division. Both of the individual were accused of the housing scam under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY) 2015. According to the report, Mozammel and Wajed had granted 23 houses of the Gowardhan block under the PMAY scheme to other people. Both of them were assisted by the chairman VCDC, Akhtar Hussain Talukdar. Police has detained Akhtar in the month of October.

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna is an initiative by the government of India and launched by PM Narendra Modi. The plan came into affect in the year 2015. The prime motive behind this Yojna was to provide the urban poor people with affordable housing. Pucca houses will be given with basic necessities including hygienic kitchen. The goal was to make 2 crore houses at a reasonable price by March 2022.

The PMAY is full of corruption. Government officials, owners of large tea estates and traders who are financially stable and sound have been added in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna. Nuwal Bhatra, Binod Boro, Egneus Tirki an few other tea estate owners are allegedly receiving benefits of PMAY. Recently, an activist called Kuldeep Khaira from Ludhiana reported the Union Ministry of urban and housing development authority and the chief minister's office to go through a strict investigation. He alleged that corruption has been done by the Municipal Corporation.

In Assam 'ineligible' people were sanctioned houses under the PMAY scheme. Even after constant warning by the state government, certain officials are still  engaged in corruption.
