KHERONI: In a significant breakthrough, Karbi Anglong (Diphu) Police arrested two individuals on Sunday evening around 6 pm for their involvement in child trafficking. The traffickers had abducted a 9-year-old girl from Rengmai Colony in Dimapur and were attempting to traffic her.

The two accused, identified as Nitu Nath and Pratima Rajbongshi alias Mumtaz Begum, both hailing from Kachua, Kampur in Nagaon district, had reportedly abducted the child last month on July 3 after posing as tenants in Rengmai Colony, Dimapur, Nagaland.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to selling the child in Arunachal Pradesh. However, thanks to the vigilance and swift action of the Village Defence Party (VDP) from Rongnihang Pathar in Diphu, the duo was apprehended and handed over to Diphu police.

Subsequently, the Dimapur Women police station personnel arrived in Diphu on Monday and took custody of the traffickers for further legal proceedings.

Karbi Anglong authorities have lauded the prompt action of the VDP in preventing a tragic case of child trafficking. Further investigations are underway.
