DIGBOI: In yet another milestone achieved within a couple of weeks following the surrender of seven hardcore ULFA militants here in Tinsukia district on March 18, a massive blow was rendered once again to the banned outfit on Sunday after two hardcore ULFA cadres laid down their arms at Pengaree in Tinsukia district.

“Two hardcore ULFA militants surrendered in Tinsukia district following a joint operation by a team of Assam Police led by Additional SP Asif Ahmed, SDPO Margherita, Debobrata Morang and a security wing of Indian Army,” said a police official.

The militants who surrendered are Punakon Chetia alias Rojoni Asom (23), son of Nobin Chetia of Tekeri Moran Gaon under Pengeree Police Station, and Jintu Sonowal alias Tutul Asom, son of Bipul Sonowal of Bormaithong under Kakopather police station in Tinsukia district. While the former joined the banned militant organization in 2015, the latter made his entry in 2016.

Twenty-eight live rounds of AK 47, 92 rounds of M-16, one 9mm pistol, 11 rounds of 9mm ammunition and one HE grenade were recovered from the rebels’ possession.

The recent crackdown of the Myanmar’s special combat army –Tatmadow - against the sheltering militant organizations based at Myanmar, has been proving a menace for the various rebel groups like the ULFA, NSCN (K) and NDFP. The militants of these outfits reportedly have been compelled to lay down their arms after they fall into the security traps laid all along the vulnerable Indo-Myanmar ‘sneaking pockets’. An official press interaction in this regard had been called for at the office of the Tinsukia Superintendent of Police till the filing of this report.
