UBPO, BKWAC observe 3rd Bodo Accord Day

LAKHIMPUR: The 3rd Bodo Accord Day was observed by the United Bodo People's Organization (UBPO) and Bodo-Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council (BKWAC) in Dhemaji district in an enthusiastic environment on Friday. The tripartite accord was signed in New Delhi on January 27 by representatives of Bodo organizations with the Central and Assam governments. It has presented a new model of power sharing and governance in Assam under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The Bodo parties include All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU), the United Bodo People's Organisation (UBPO) and all the four factions of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB).

To observe the day, UBPO and BKWAC jointly organized a day-long programme at the office of the Ex-BLT Welfare Society, Undivided Lakhimpur district unit, located at Sanjari Nwgwr, Simen Chapori in a befitting manner. The agenda of the event began with the unfurling of the organizational flag by Manuranjan Basumatary, the UBPO president. It was followed by the smriti tarpan programme which was inaugurated by BKWAC Chief Executive Member Mihiniswar Basumatary, Deputy Chief Executive Member Romeo Narzary by paying floral tribute to the statue of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma and other martyrs of the Bodo community.

The open session of the event commenced with Manuranjan Basumatary in the chair. It was held under the management of general secretary Pitambar Brahma, who explained the objective of the event. The open session was inaugurated by writer-poet Ranjit Kakati. In his lecture, Ranjit Kakati expected that each and every para of the 3rd Bodo Accord would be implemented in letter and spirit and it would bring drastic changes to the deprived section of the Bodo community people in terms of development, social transformation and amelioration in the upcoming days.

BKWAC Chief Mihiniswar Basumatary graced the occasion as appointed speaker. While speaking on the occasion, Mihiniswar Basumatary said that the 3rd Bodo Peace Accord is the outcome of the supreme sacrifice of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma and other martyrs of the community along with relentless struggle of the community people. "At present, reflection of Bodofa's thoughts and selfless love for the community and adherence to his ideology have been observed in the Bodo society. It is a positive sign and it will lead the community to progress and prosperity. We must go ahead with united strength in order to ensure equal development of the community people," Mihiniswar Basumatary added.

He urged upon Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary to take steps to empower the BKWAC. He further said, "The nominal amount of fund allotted to the BKWAC is not enough to render due development, as expected, among the Bodo community people living in 22 districts of Assam, covering the Barak valley. So, the government should increase in the budgetary allocation to the BKWAC," Mihiniswar Basumatary asserted.
