GUWAHATI: Uma Chetry, the first woman cricketer from Assam to play for India's senior team, has been added to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Annual Player Contracts for 2024-25. Chetry has been assigned to Group C, a milestone that shows the increasing prominence of cricket in the northeastern region.
The BCCI announced the contracts, which will be effective from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025. Chetry joins a pool of talented players in Group C, which includes Yastika Bhatia, Radha Yadav, Shreyanka Patil, Titas Sadhu, Arundathi Reddy, Amanjot Kaur, Sneh Rana, and Pooja Vastrakar.
Born on July 27, 2002, in Kandulimari village, Golaghat district, Assam, Chetry learned her cricket skills playing with her brother and boys from the neighborhood. Her mother was instrumental in encouraging her to play the game.
Chetry made her breakthrough in June 2023 when she played for India A in the ACC Women's T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup. She debuted internationally on July 7, 2024, in a T20I match against South Africa.
Chetry's inclusion in the national team and her new BCCI contract are a source of inspiration for young cricketers from the northeast, showing that talent and hard work can overcome obstacles. Her achievement is a demonstration of the potential of young sportspersons from this part of the country and their ability to reach the national level.
