DHEKIAJULI: Mahbubul Haque, the Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), has been granted interim bail in connection with a case filed at the Dhekiajuli police station. Following the court's decision, Haque is expected to be released from custody shortly.
The court had reserved its verdict on the bail application last week, leading to anticipation regarding the outcome. Haque was previously arrested on February 22, 2025, after securing bail in two separate cases related to Patharkandi. In addition to the Dhekiajuli case, he has received adjournments in other legal matters pending in Kokrajhar, Barpeta, and Gossaigaon.
Haque's arrest has raised considerable alarm among his supporters, a majority of whom have demanded his release, claiming that the charges against him are unfounded and part of a political conspiracy. The Chancellor has been embroiled in several legal controversies, which have attracted attention from various quarters.
Days ago, Sonitpur Judicial Magistrate First Class Hriday Jyoti Kashyap rejected Hoque's application for bail after hearing arguments presented by the prosecution and defense.
In February, Hoque and five of his ERD Foundation teachers, who run several schools, were arrested after a report that students from other districts were allowed to take Class 12 CBSE exams with promises of being given undue help.
