DIBRUGARH: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the 56th Varsity Week at the Dibrugarh University today. The minister was joined by the Queen of Indian Track & Field, Padmashri awardee PT Usha in an attempt to boost sports culture among the youth and especially among the students of the university.
Speaking at the event, Sarbananda Sonowal extended his heartfelt congratulations to the university community for organizing a successful celebration of Varsity Week. Welcoming PT Usha, Sarbananda Sonowal expressed confidence that her guidance would significantly contribute to the advancement of the university’s sports infrastructure and overall athletic development.
“We all realise that to establish a strong presence on the global stage, we must excel in education, culture, research, and sports. It is imperative that we prepare ourselves for these challenges. Once we have adapted to them, it is certain that we will realise the vision of PM Narendra Modi ji’s Viksit Bharat,” Sarbananda Sonowal said.
Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the importance of intelligence, skills, and perseverance in today’s competitive world. He stressed that while technology plays a crucial role in modern progress, it should complement traditional social, cultural, and spiritual values, which promote respect, devotion, love, and harmony.
“The spirit of brotherhood and unity that we see in the Olympics and other major sporting events across the world should also be reflected in our lives. Dibrugarh University is home to immense talent, and it is the responsibility of the university authorities and student organizations to nurture it. As we move ahead to realise the vision of Viksit Bharat, our educational institutions play the most crucial role in shaping the future roadmap. The successful achievement of this vision lies in the elevation of our universities and schools to become world class, both in terms of infrastructure as well as academic progress,” added Sarbananda Sonowal.
Expressing pride as an alumnus of the university, Sonowal lauded the students’ resilience and determination, asserting that such qualities would ensure their future success. Sonowal cited PT Usha’s journey as an inspiring example of overcoming challenges to achieve greatness. Drawing a comparison with global academic institutions, he shared an inspiring fact from the recent Paris Olympics, where students from Stanford University in the United States won a total of 39 medals.
