United Bodo People's Organization hails decision to set up 'Karbi Welfare Council'

LAKHIMPUR: The UBPO (United Bodo People's Organization) has hailed the decision to set up a Karbi Welfare Council for focussed development of Karbi people living in various districts of the State outside the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) area as per the agreement inked in the Karbi Peace Accord.

It was expressed by UBPO president Manoranjan Basumatari on Saturday.

Notably, the Karbi Peace Accord was signed in New Delhi on September 4 by the People's Democratic Council of Karbi Longri, United People's Liberation Army, Karbi Longri NC Hills Liberation Front, Kuki Liberation Front and Karbi People's Liberation Tiger with representatives of the Centre and Assam government. The agreement, which would mean restoration of peace after decades of violence, was finalised in the presence of Union home minister Amit Shah, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

Talking to this correspondent in this regard, UBPO president Manoranjan Basumatari said that a delegation of the organization held a discussion with Sarsing Ingti Kathar (Songbijit), the Chairperson of People's Democratic Council of Karbi (PDCK), the signatory organization of the Karbi Peace Accord. The discussion was held at the Singhasan hotel located in Diphu.

During the discussion, PDCK Chairperson Sarsing Ingti Kathar apprised the positive outcomes of the Karbi Peace Accord in front of the UBPO delegation.

"This Memorandum of Settlement will ensure greater devolution of autonomy to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, protection of identity, language, and culture of the Karbi people,'' said Sarsing Ingti Kathar.
