KOKRAJHAR: The United Tribal Organization of Assam (UTOA) participated in the Asia Land Forum 2025, held in Jakarta, Indonesia recently. The event was organized by the International Land Coalition (ILC), Asia and Konsorsium Pembaruan Agraria (KPA) Indonesia, bringing together land rights organizations, indigenous groups, policymakers, and civil society leaders from across the continent to discuss and strategize on equitable land governance.
Talking to The Sentinel, President of UTOA Markus Basumatary said that the UTOA actively participated in the Asia Land Forum sessions, including two days of field visits. He said that the UTOA shared insights from Assam and the broader Northeast Indian region while learning from the experiences of other indigenous and grassroots organizations across Asia. The event provided a unique opportunity to build partnerships, exchange knowledge, and advocate for stronger land rights policies on a global stage. He also said that this forum was an eye-opener and an excellent platform for indigenous and tribal organizations to share their struggles, learn from others, and collectively push for land justice.
As a new member of ILC, UTOA is committed to strengthening indigenous land rights in Northeast India and beyond, he said, adding that the UTOA, as a key takeaway from the Asia Land Forum 2025, aims to leverage its membership in ILC to further its mission of securing land tenure, preserving indigenous culture, and promoting sustainable development in Bodoland and other tribal regions.
