GUWAHATI: The interim bail of University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque has been extended to April 25. This comes after an inconclusive hearing on Wednesday, which was postponed because the case diary in connection with his ongoing legal matters was not available.

Hoque's current legal troubles stem from a case registered at Dhekiajuli Police Station, adding to his complex history of legal confrontations. He was re-arrested in March after being taken into custody by Sonitpur Police from Sribhumi District Jail, following a production warrant issued by the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Sribhumi.

The case, identified as number 55/2025, was filed by Mukshed Alom and includes serious allegations under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), specifically Sections 318(4), 316(5), and 336(3), as well as Section 11(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Hoque is set to appear before the Tezpur court on March 13, 2025, as the legal proceedings continue. His arrest follows previous legal battles, with the Gauhati High Court having granted stay orders in three other cases from Barpeta, Kokrajhar, and Gossaigaon police stations.

However, the Dhekiajuli case has progressed independently, resulting in his ongoing detention. Initially, Hoque and five associates were held in judicial custody at Sribhumi District Jail, but he has since been transferred to Dhekiajuli, reflecting the seriousness of the investigation.
