Veteran Assam Agitation leader and BJP organiser Sarat Chandra Sarma passes away at 69

ORANG: Veteran Assam Agitation activist and former AASU leader Sarat Chandra Sarma (69), eldest son of late Jadab Chandra Sharma of Gejengaguri under Orang in Udalguri district, passed away at Tezpur Medical College and Hospital on Sunday at around 10 a.m. His death has cast a pall of gloom over Gejengaguri and the adjoining areas.

Sarma was among the committed activists who actively participated in the historic Assam Agitation of 1979–1983. He remained closely associated with the movement during its turbulent years and faced police action on several occasions for his involvement. His association with martyr Dwijen Bhuyan of Gejengaguri, near Orang, further reflected his active role in the agitation.

Known for his dedication, organisational ability and commitment to public causes, Sarma’s contribution to the Assam Agitation is remembered by those associated with the movement. His passing marks the loss of a veteran activist who witnessed and participated in one of Assam’s most significant mass movements.

In the later part of his public life, Sarma joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and took up organisational responsibilities. He served as the organisational secretary of Gupteswar Mandal BJP and remained an active BJP worker until his death. He continued to maintain close contact with party workers, supporters and people of the locality.

The news of his demise spread rapidly across the area, evoking deep sorrow among people from different sections of society. Political workers, former Assam Agitation activists, friends, relatives and well-wishers mourned his death and recalled his long association with public and organisational activities.

Sarma leaves behind his wife, two sons, a daughter, three brothers and four sisters, besides brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and a large number of followers and admirers.

His mortal remains were taken for the last rites on Sunday evening, where hundreds of mourners and followers gathered to pay their final respects. The gathering witnessed an emotional farewell as people remembered Sarma’s contribution to the Assam Agitation, his organisational commitment and his association with public life.

With his death, Gejengaguri and the wider Orang area have lost a veteran public worker whose journey from the Assam Agitation to active organisational politics remained closely connected with the people of the region.
