KOKRAJHAR: Veteran tribal political leader, former MLA and MP Late Charan Narzary was remembered on his 6th death anniversary on Wednesday as family members and well-wishers conveyed tribute to him. Narzary made tremendous contributions to society from teaching to literature and culture to politics and served for a long time in his various capacities and positions.
He was 87 when he breathed his last at Down Town Hospital, Guwahati, six years ago. He was a Professor of Kokrajhar College before joining politics. Having a degree of MA LLB, he was the Founder General Secretary of Plains Tribal Council of Assam (PTCA), the first regional tribal political party of lower Assam in 1967. An advocate, poet, writer, lyricist, associated with Boro literary and cultural movement of ‘Bitharai Afat’ (1952-1967), editor of ‘Alari,’ and ‘The Bodo’ journals, his poem ‘Onaru Thu Chigang’ stirred up the young Boro generation. His dream for Udayachal, a separate state for plains tribals of Assam remained unfulfilled. Narzary was a front-line leader of the Bodo Movement, known as ‘Udayachal’ in the early 70’s and served many years as MLA and MP.
Apart from this, he was a great orator, a philosopher, recipient of the ‘Man of the Year-2014’ award from Engkhong Welfare Society, and a freelance journalist.
The mass joining programme was graced by CEM Debolal Gorlosa, Chairman Mohet Hojai, BJP District President Dhriti Thaosen, executive members, and MACs.
