HAFLONG: In protest against extraction of stone from Diyung River and to raise awareness to save rivers, villagers of several villages like Boro-Waphu, Kelolo, Pura, Longma,Borohaflong, N.Leikul and Longma II staged sit-in below the Dayang Railway bridge from 11 am to 4 pm on Friday.

Villagers demanded an immediate halt on the extraction of stones from the Diyung River since ongoing stone extraction works at Diyung River have become a major threat to the area and have also disturbed the ecosystem, resulting in endangering the aquatic lives.

Later, they submitted a memorandum to Amitabh Rajkhowa, Principal Secretary of North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, requesting him to stop the ongoing stone extraction work at Diyung River. They stated that the ongoing stone extraction works at Diyung River were posing a serious threat to the ecosystem of the area. If the extraction work continued, sooner or later the scenic beauty of the land would vanish and many families residing in the Haflong town area and the outskirts, who depend on drinking water supply from this river, would face a major problem.

Therefore, they requested him to take up the necessary action to stop the stone extraction work at Diyung River as soon as possible.
