TINSUKIA: A five-day vocational training programme on vermicomposting that began on July 23 concluded on Tuesday at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Tinsukia, marking a significant step towards promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
The training commenced on July 23, with a comprehensive theory session conducted by Dr Kripal Borah, Subject Matter Specialist (Soil Science). He covered key topics including vermicompost, vermiwash, and earthworm production technology. He also provided valuable insights into common challenges faced during vermicomposting and shared organic solutions for effective management.
The training module included a practical session in hands-on training and application on vermicompost and vermiwash emphasising on soil health and its application across various crops including vegetables, fruits, tea plantations, nurseries, and seedlings. Dr Borah led the sessions.
Lila Kanta Bhattarai, a successful vermicompost entrepreneur, shared his inspiring journey. The day also saw the participation of Dr Manoranjan Neog, Director of Extension Education, AAU Jorhat, who graced the occasion as guest of honour and distributed vermi beds to trainees, encouraging them to adopt the technology.
Rajit Dutta, District Agricultural Officer, Tinsukia, delivered a lecture on various government schemes supporting vermicomposting and the role of government in promoting vermicompost entrepreneurship.
The day concluded with a written examination to assess the trainees’ understanding. On the concluding day, the trainees were taken on an exposure visit to the vermicompost unit and the farm of Pankaj Verma, a successful entrepreneur at Loonpuria Kaibarta Gaon. The visit, guided by Dr Borah and Priyanka Amonge, SMS (Agronomy), provided practical insights into real-world vermicomposting operations.
The programme concluded with a closing ceremony, where certificates and informational leaflets on vermicomposting were distributed by the Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Tinsukia.
