KOKRAJHAR: The United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) on Thursday observed its 6th foundation day with a day-long programme at Bodofa Cultural Complex, Kokrajhar where the president of Assam State BJP, Bhabesh Kalita was the chief guest of the meeting.

As part of the programme, the president of the UPPL, Pramod Boro hoisted the party flag followed by homage to martyrs by Rwn Gwra Narzary, vice-president of the party. The programme was also attended by senior party leaders and workers.

Talking to reporters, the president of the UPPL, Pramod Boro said that the party was formed to ensure bringing an alternative government in BTC as well as a major player in the State which would establish good governance. He said that the UPPL was committed to fulfilling its promises. He thanked minister UG Brahma, the founder of UPPL, who aimed at giving people a corruption-free and people-friendly governance in the region. In the six years journey, the UPPL could form coalition government in BTC and become an alliance partner in the State as well with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).

"We have lots of problems in education, agriculture, communication and socio-economic sector. The Centre and the State have their own education policy while the BTC has been facing severe problems in education due to lack of separate education policy. Our government is preparing a separate Bodoland Education Policy to deal with the problems related to the education sector in the council," he said, adding that they would adopt policies on enhancing scientific method in agriculture and bringing infrastructure development. He said that the unemployment problem was one of the major problems in the region for which many youths had left the region looking for jobs in other States. "Most of the youths who are working in different cities of the country lack skills, for which they are deprived of many opportunities," he said, adding that his government would ensure establishment of several skill development training centres to impart training in various fields so that the youths get self-employment opportunities. He also said that innovative schemes would be taken up to upgrade educational institutions and ensure development of rural economy.

Boro said that the UPPL-led new government had liabilities of over Rs. 2,300 crore made by the previous government and they had to move forward with this burden on one hand and the pandemic on the other. He said that the COVID-19 and lockdown were impeding the development activities in the region and implementation of some clauses of the BTR accord. He called upon people to cooperate with the government in fulfilling their promises.

"Despite this fact, the government is going ahead with various welfare and developmental schemes for the people. The foundation of the second medical college and hospital at Tamulpur in Baksa district has been laid, food processing units are to be set up soon, 1.05 lakh families of the region are going to have PMAY houses within August next year, jobs will be given to unemployed youths and youths will be absorbed through skill development," he said.

On the release of founder chairman of NDFB, Ranjan Daimary, Boro said that they had already pursued the government to shift the case to the State Government from the NIA and sought maximum relaxation from all cases pending against him as he was also one of the signatories of the BTR accord. He said that they had been demanding release of not just Ranjan Daimary, but also many leaders of the outfit like B. Rifikhang, as well as jailed leaders of Adivasi militant outfits, Karbi and Dimasa outfits. He also urged the government to provide a suitable place for Daimary who is currently in a congested room at 10 APBn, Kahilipara, as alleged by former NDFB leaders.

On the killing of former All BTC Minority Students' Union (ABMSU) president Lafikul Islam, Boro said that the CBI was investigating the case. He, however, said that the culprits should be brought to book.
