Wild Jumbo Found Dead in Udalguri District

TANGLA: In another incident of elephant death, a 10-year old wild jumbo which purportedly got separated from the herd was electrocuted to death after its trunk came in contact with a live wire in a paddy field near 3 No. Bhutiachang Tea Estate under Paneri PS along the Indo-Bhutan border in Udalguri district on Tuesday night.

“The villagers witnessed the jumbo on Wednesday morning and informed us. Later we retrieved the body. We suspect it to be a case of electrocution but it can only be confirmed after post-mortem report,” said a forest official. The villagers usually lay such live wires to stop elephant herds from straying into the paddy fields. The death of the elephant also prompted villagers who gathered in large numbers to pay reverence. The site of the incident is under Nonai Forest reserve forest bordering Indo-Bhutan and is an elephant corridor. According to official statistics, as many as six elephants and 20 humans have lost their lives due to the man-elephant conflict in the district in 2019 till date.
