Woman Allegedly Killed By Father-In-Law For Turning Down Sexual Advances In Assam

The woman had previously shared her plight with her mother but no action had been taken by her parents.

Guwahati: A woman has been killed under mysterious circumstances in Mangaldai town under Darrang District. The woman is identified as Sushmita Deka, who was a lecturer in Dahi Junior College. Her death has infuriated the locals of Mangaldai who are now demanding a probe into the matter. 

A crowd of villagers including the family of the victim has demanded the arrest of the father-in-law of the deceased and has gheraoed the Mangaldai Police Station. 

The father-in-law has allegedly killed Susmita Deka, according to the villagers.

Addressing the press, one of the villagers said, "The lecturer was murdered by her father-in-law for rejecting his sexual advances. He always made an attempt to harass her sexually when her husband is out of the station, but since she refused, the father-in-law had tortured her both mentally and physically for the last couple of months."

The victim's father also revealed that her daughter had shared her plight with his wife but they had not paid much attention to the issue.

The deceased was married to Jyotishmoy Medhi of Howly's Mahanpur area in the district of Barpeta. Jyotishmoy Medhi is the son of Kushal Medhi.

A thorough investigation has been demanded by the villagers at the earliest. The body of the deceased is still in police custody and has not been handed over to the family.

The real cause of the death of Susmita Deka has not been ascertained yet. The investigation for this case is still underway.
