GUWAHATI: As the world is celebrating International Women's Day on Tuesday 8 March, various initiatives are taken for the awareness and equality of women's role in society.

In one such initiative, the food industry Britannia Pvt. Ltd has taken a major decision of expanding women's employment in its largest plant of northeast located near Guwahati city of Assam.

The company took the special celebration of International Women's Day to announce that it will increase the women workforce to 65% in the Assam plant.

The plant was inaugurated in July 2018 by Wadia Group at Rampur located close to Guwahati city. It is in the Dhandula Rangamati region of the Kamrup district.

The official at the plant informed that the factory at present has a total of 1,367 employees on a permanent and contractual basis and among those 60% are women.

Officials further said that women play a major role both in society as well as in the FMCH (food moving consumer goods) company. Britannia has always been working for the upliftment and empowerment of women through various initiatives.

According to officials in the promotion of a more inclusive environment, women in the position of leader have made significant progress mainly in the sector of industries.

With the passing of time, the company has rapidly increased the tally on female employees at the facility of manufacturing. The food industry aims to complete the year 2022 with 65% of its workforce as female as stated by an official.

It was also informed that the Assam plant has a daily output capacity of 260 tonnes installed with present capacity utilization of 210-240 tonnes. The plant makes 6 distinct items that are the company's major brands such as Marie Gold, Good Day and Nutrichoice.

Currently, it is difficult to estimate the exact number of staff to get employed for this year but it is for sure that women employees will account for 65% of the entire workforce claimed the official. The workforce capacity will increase with the increase in the demand for goods.
