LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of All India Mahila Sanskritik Sangathan (AIMSS) initiated a protest programme in North Lakhimpur town in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Monday expressing resentment against the sky-rocketing prices of petro-products, all essential commodities and bus-fare hike. By staging the protest programme, the organization demanded the State government to control the exorbitant prices of all essential commodities, to curb the illegal hike in the bus fare along with the fares of all other light passenger vehicles, to withdraw the added tax by the State government upon petrol and diesel, to strengthen the Public Distribution System (PDS) and to ensure the supply of all essential commodities to the public through the Fair Price Shops in judicious prices. By staging the same agitation programme, the organization also demanded to curb the smuggling of narcotic substances and to stop eviction drives without adopting rehabilitation measures for the evicted people prior to launching the eviction drives. During the demonstration, the protesters rocked the environment by shouting slogans in support of the demands.

Later, the organization submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister with a charter of five demands through the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur. Lily Doley, the convener of Lakhimpur district unit of AIMSS informed that the organization, through the memorandum, demanded the Chief Minister and the State government to initiate effective steps at the earliest to curb the price hike to provide relief to the common people.
