KOKRAJHAR: With the theme 'End inequalities. End AIDS', World AIDS Day was observed in Chirang district along with all over the world on Wednesday. On the occasion, Chirang District Health Society, in association with Disha NGO, Basugaon organized an AIDS awareness rally at Kajalgaon. The awareness rally was participated by ASHA, Anganwadi workers, NGOs and students and was flagged off by Dr. Ratul Chandra Bordoloi, Joint Director, Chirang District Health Services.

An awareness meeting was also held on the occasion, in which several ways to prevent and reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS infection, including what treatments are presently available for the people with this virus, were widely discussed.

District AIDS Control Officer Dr. Kumud Deka, District Legal Services Officer Babidita Gogoi, Disha NGO president and journalist Jayanta Debnath, resource person Pankaj Mahanta and others were present at the awareness meeting presided over by Dr. Ratul Chandra Bordoloi, Joint Director of District Health Services.

GOLAGHAT: On the occasion of World AIDS Day, an awareness meeting was observed in Golaghat on Wednesday under the aegis of Golaghat AIDS Control Board at auditorium hall of Golaghat Municipality Board. Upper Assam Commissioner Sidhartha Singh took part in the meeting and appealed to create mass awareness among the people as well as to arrange awareness meeting at colleges. Several noted senior doctors of Golaghat, Dr Robin Tamuli, Dr Taufik Ahmed. Dr Rupak Bora, Dr Ranjit Hazarike spoke briefly on AIDS and how to control and prevent AIDS.

TEZPUR: In a move to unite in the fight against HIV, the Sonitpur District Health Society, Tezpur in association with Indian Medical Association, Tezpur Chapter and District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Sonitpur observed World Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Day on Wednesday at Tezpur Kanaklata Civil Hospital.

The rally was flagged off by Deputy Commissioner Bhupesh Chandra Das and Chatra Bhukhan Gogoi, District and Sessions Judge, Dr T B Chetry, Superintendent of KCH, Dr Atul Kumar Kalita, President, IMA Tezpur chapter also participated in the event. The rally was led by nurses of the School of Nursing, Kanaklata Civil Hospital, Tezpur.

SSB and other healthcare workers also participated in the rally. The rally started from the School of Nursing, Kanaklata Civil Hospital and passed through the town.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Bhupesh Chandra Das said that the main objective of World AIDS Day is to create awareness. "Apart from the rally, we have made the best use of the mass media, and folk media to ensure the widest publicity of our programmes," he said. Das also laid stress on mouth-to-mouth publicity, which is more powerful than any other medium of communication.

During the programme, Chatra Bhukhan Gogoi, District and Sessions Judge, Sonitpur said, "World AIDS Day gives an opportunity to people to unite in the fight against HIV and show support for people living with HIV." Gogoi put stress on raising the level of awareness among people by involving various organizations which are willing to work in the field of HIV/AIDS.

This was followed by an awareness meeting and a quiz contest among students at IMA house premises. Addressing the occasion as chief speaker, Dr Hemendra Kumar Borah said that the spread of Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection (HIV) leads to Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) which attacks the immune system of the patient and reduces its resistance to other diseases. He added that understanding and having a broad knowledge about HIV can help prevent or reduce the risk of getting the disease.

This includes being aware of signs and symptoms, transmission and risk factors. This disease is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Due to this disease, people get exposed to vulnerable infections and diseases, he said.
