TEZPUR: Don Bosco School near Chitralekha Udyan observed World Environmental Day on Saturday to generate awareness and remind the students about the importance to save and protecting nature. The programme was inaugurated by Fr. Theodore Purty, Principal of DBS, near Chitralekha Udyan in presence of the Headmistress Sr Shemily S H, teachers, students and other dignitaries.

The programme began with a lovely environment song titled 'The Earth,' sung by a group of students of the school and it was followed by drawing competition on the topic of 'Save Earth', a short play was also performed by the school students based on environmental awareness. Different programmes and activities were conducted by the students such as cleanliness drive in and around the school campus, spreading the message to protect and save the plants through write-ups on placards. Beautiful messages were delivered by the students of different houses on the importance of saving the environment.

As a part of the programme, variety of saplings were planted within the school premises by the students under the guidance of the teachers of the school.

In his inaugural session Fr. Theodore Purty, principal of the school, talked about the importance of the day and why it is being celebrated all over the world. He said, "We should avoid the use of plastic and start using paper bags, and also plant more trees, to help us in providing oxygen, improving air quality, conserving water and supporting wildlife." He further said, "A person inhales oxygen equivalent to approx 3 cylinders per day. 1 cylinder is Rs. 700, then for three cylinders the cost will be Rs. 2100 which is Rs. 7,66,000 per annum. i.e for an average life of a person of 65 years approximately Rs. 5 crore is needed. That is the value of air, which we get free from trees and plants, he added.

Headmistress Sr Shemily S H also said that the Environment Day is the people's day to do something for earth and environment. The environment is just like our neighbourhood, so we have to preserve and conserve it.
