With the theme ‘We Need Food Not Tobacco’, the World No Tobacco Day was observed at District Library Auditorium Hall on Wednesday. The programme was organized by the District Health Society, National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP) in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority.

HAFLONG: With the theme ‘We Need Food Not Tobacco’, the World No Tobacco Day was observed at District Library Auditorium Hall on Wednesday. The programme was organized by the District Health Society, National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP) in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority.

Principal Secretary, Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, Thai Tsho Daulagupu, spoke about the ill effects of tobacco consumption and how, especially school students, should be aware about the dangers involved with consumption of tobacco. He encouraged the students to help one another to stay away from such bad habits and to inform the higher authorities in case tobacco use is noticed around their educational institution campuses.

Speaking on the theme, Associate Professor of Haflong Government College, Dr Dinesh Tiwari shared the experience of his friend whose health and family was affected due to tobacco use. He also said that care should be taken to educate youths about the harmful effects of tobacco.

Secretary of District Legal Authority Services, Gautam Daimary talked about the importance of enforcing the rules under COTPA Act. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Leena Hakmaosa SDM & HO, highlighted the ill effects of tobacco - how it causes heart disease, lung cancer, and even increases chances of a stroke. She encouraged the students to stay away from tobacco and requested everyone to contribute their bit to try to make a tobacco-free district.

A quiz competition was also organized to create awareness among the students of schools and colleges regarding ill effects of tobacco consumption and its social impacts. More than 30 students had actively participated in the quiz.

The programme was also attended by Gayatri Naiding, Inspector of School, Dr. L Vheipei, District Nodal Officer, teachers and students from various schools and other officials from various departments.
