SILCHAR: A day after distributing dustbins to the residents, Cachar Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri along with other officials held an interactive session with residents of Ward No.24 here on Friday. Speaking in Bengali, she said that collection of segregated solid resource has started on a good note.

She praised ward commissioner of Ward No.24 Madhumita Sharma for coming forward to implement the pilot project in her ward. She mentioned that all those who are not interested in taking the dustbins for free and paying user charges of Rs 3 per day for the service of collecting garbage from doorstep twice a day may have to pay a fine of Rs 100 per day for littering the roads and drains as per the Solid Waste Management Rules.

Madhumita urged the residents to cooperate with the SRLM system. People expressed willingness to own up this initiative and contribute to the success of Swachh Sundor Silchar after understanding the difference and hazards of littering garbage on the roads and drains.

Assistant Commissioners Abhilash Barnwal, Maria Tanim, and Navanita Hazarika, were also present at the meeting. Later, C Srinivasan, waste management system expert, gave a presentation through slide-show and explained the difference between earlier collection system or mode of mixed waste and present system of collecting the material from household before it gets converted into stinking garbage.
