NSCN Militants Apprehended in Silchar, Sent to Police Remand

SILCHAR: Lakhipur sub-division of Cachar in Barak Valley located in close proximity to the hills of Dima Hasao and Manipur with difficult terrain around continues to be a safe passage for the movement of extremists belonging to different outfits. Often and quite frequently, they fall into security dragnet, put on trial and then sent to jail. But once out on bail, they are back to their jungle mission, admitted one senior police officer without being identified.

On Thursday, on the basis of a secret tip off, Anurag Sarmah, SDPO, along with his staff nabbed Kabiga Rongmei, former finance secretary of NSCN (K) of Zeliangrong region, from Namdailong area under Jirighat police station.

Kabiga Rongmei was subjected to preliminary interrogation and on the basis of the inputs retrieved from him, a joint operation with 37 Assam Rifles was launched immediately in the Namdailong, Alubazar and Shantipur areas of Jirighat. After a night long operation, police and Assam Rifles zeroed on NSCN (K) extremist identified as Raiphulung, chairman of Zeliangrong region.

Search was carried out in the area which resulted in the recovery of one M 16 rifle with one magazine and 18 live rounds. Both the militants, Kabiga and Raiphulung were produced before the sub-divisional judicial magistrate court on Friday which remanded them to four day police custody. In this operation was involved not only the Jirighat police led by O/C Manoj Rajbongshi, but also the PSOs of SDPO and Assam Rifle. The Assam Rifle team was led by Lt Col Jyoti Lama and Major Ganesh Mehra.
