Dibrugarh: Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) has announced a cash reward of Rupees One Lakh to Hima Das the first Indian to win Gold Title at U-20 Championships 2018 held at Tampere, Finland in Women’s 400m with a time 51:46 seconds, overtaking three competitors on the last 100 meter stretch of the race.
The eighteen-year-old sprinter hails from Nagaon District of Assam and belongs to a humble origin. She is a glowing example to the world as to how commitment and hard work can bring sporting excellence at the highest level without a proper sporting infrastructure. Hima Das the eldest daughter of Ronjit Das and Jonali Das, who are rice farmers by profession had been playing football in her childhood and wanted to pursue a career in football.
Das later switched over to athletics and began participating in short and middle distance races in competitions at various level. But the real change came when she caught the attention of Nipon Das, an athletics coach from the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare, Govt. of Assam who made her shift to Guwahati, and got her enrolled to the state academy. The journey of Hima Das in global athletics may have just begun but her prime time in the tracks is yet to come.
Managing Director, BCPL, Ashok Kumar Singh, rightly said in his 72nd Independence Day address that this is indeed a proud moment for all of us in Assam as the sprinter has etched the names in the pages of history and has brought glory to the Nation as well as to the state of Assam. As a responsible corporate citizen, BCPL is committed to promoting sporting activities at regional and National level.
