GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched the Khelo India Youth Games 2020 torch relay at a glittering function held at Sarusajai Sports Complex in Guwahati today.

Guwahati will host the 3rd edition of the Games from January 10. Around 10,000 athletes and officials will participate in the meet which will conclude on January 22.

The Torch Relay function was held at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium at the Sarusajai Sports Complex. Several former players like swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika, boxer Kalpana Choudhury, football player Jewel Bey, and others joined Chief Minister on the dais.

The torch will now move all 33 districts before returned to Guwahati on January 10, the opening day of the Games.

In the same programme, Chief Minister Sonowal presented cash awards to the medal winners of South Asian Games 2019-20 held in Kathmandu, Nepal and 2016 held in Guwahati-Shillong. He also presented cash incentives to the medal winners under the Integrated Sports Policy of Government of Assam and special cash awards announced by the Assam Olympic Association.

The players who received financial assistance in the programme are Shiva Thapa (Boxing), Hasina Begum (Kabaddi), Manash Jyoti Changmai (Archery), Jayanta Talukdar (Archery), Vinit Rai (Football), Halicharan Narzary (Football), Sabita Ramchiary (Taekwondo), Mridul Borgohain (Lawn Bowl), Ananda Narzary (Lawn Bowl), Bangita Hazarika (Lawn Bowl), Tania Choudhury (Lawn Bowl), Nayan Moni Saikia (Lawn Bowl), Surajit Changmai (Weightlifting), Siddhant Gogoi (Weightlifting), Abhishek Gogoi (Para Athlete), Anantyam Rajkumar (Para Swimmer), Ashmita Chaliha (Badminton), Shivangi Sharma (Swimming), Rodali Baruah (Taekwondo), Harsha Singha (Taekwondo), Kabinta Devi (Fencing).

Speaking on the occasion Chief Minister Sonowal announcing his government’s emphasis on sports said that his government is drawing a broad road map using Education, Culture, and Sports as foundation stones for the development of human resources and growth of the state. He said that a perfect balance among Education, Culture, and Sports will be a force multiplier for the development of the state and its human resources.

He also urged upon the 633 sportspersons from Assam participating in the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games 2020 to work hard and play to bring laurels to the state.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora launched Khelo India Youth Games 2020 Video Song at the same function and spoke on the occasion. Member Secretary State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare Lakhya Konwar along with Sandip Pradhan, Director General of Sports Authority of India, Onkarmal Kedia, Director General of Sports Authority of Assam, Veteran Sports Journalist Premadhar Sarma, CEO Khelo India Youth Games 2020 Avinash Joshi were also present in the function.
