Khelo India Youth Games: Arunachal Pradesh weightlifter Bengia Tani strikes gold medal

Bengia Tani became the first athlete from Arunachal Pradesh to win a Gold medal in the ongoing fourth edition of Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG)-2021

ITANAGAR: Bengia Tani became the first athlete from Arunachal Pradesh to win a Gold medal in the ongoing fourth edition of Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG)-2021 being held at Panchkula, Haryana here.

Tani clinched the medal in the 67 (Men) category of weightlifting championship by lifting a total of 264kg (snatch 115kg; 149kg clean & jerk).

Meanwhile, Boni Mangkhya, Shankar Lapung clinched silver medals each, Golom Tinku and Balo Yalam won bronze medals.

Boni Mangkhya won in 55kg (Women) category weightlifting with total of 166kg (72kg, snatch; 94kg clean & jerk) and Balo Yalam in 59kg category with a total of 164kg (snatch 71kg; 93kg clean & jerk). In the men's weightlifting category, Shankar Lapung finished with a total 246kg (109kg snatch; 137 clean & jerk) and Golom Tinku with a total 240kg (103kg snatch; 137kg clean & jerk).

The Chef de Mission (CDM) Karbia Dodum, who is also the Mission Director of Khelo India Games, informed that the arunachal in KIYG 2022 of weightlifting have so far showcased a spectacular performance in the weightlifting event by bagging 7 medals by the end of second day of KIYG. He said the state bagged the first gold medal in the ongoing KIYG and the entire team is hopeful that there will be more gold medals in the remaining sports events. 

"We have so far bagged one gold medal, 4 silver medals and 2 bronze. Likewise, we also look forward to winning medals in the coming sports disciplines. We have qualified in five sports disciplines, Athletics, Archery, Boxing, Judo and Weight lifting," he said.

Earlier on the day one of KIYG, Sandiya Gungli and Chera Tania clinched Silver medals each in Girls and Mens weightlifting category, respectively. With the end of day two of KIYG, Arunachal Pradesh has bagged 7 medals. It includes 1 Gold, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze.
