GUWAHATI: Assam suffered second defeat in Ranji Trophy this season and that too within three days against Uttar Pradesh in Lahli today.

Displaying a pathetic batting performance Assam today bowled out paltry 120 in their second innings. Uttar Pradesh reached the target losing four wickets.

It was the second defeat for Assam and they are now out of the competition. The side, placed in group 'G', are at the bottom of the four- team points table after the second game and failed to open their account.

Assam started the day from their overnight score 5/0 and lost wickets in regular interval. Except opener Rishav Das, no other batsmen were able to perform as per the expectation. It was Pallav Kumar Das (12) who first departed today and he was quickly followed by Riyan Parag (5) and Gokul Sarma (0). Thereafter there was a little pause as Rishav tried to repair the damage with Saahil Jain (3). The fifth wicket partnership between them produced 24 runs. But once the partnership was broken on the team's total 44 the resistance was over. The side managed to get past 100-mark only because of Rishav and number 11 batsman Hridip Deka.

Rishav played a classy knock under pressure and the batsmen, who opened the innings yesterday, was the last man to get out. He faced 120 balls to score 73 and there were 15 boundaries in his innings. Rishav on the last wicket partnership with Hridip, added 35 runs which turned out as the best partnership in the innings.

Yash Dayal and Ankit Rajput bagged four wickets each.

Uttar Pradesh required 111 runs to win and they did it losing four wickets. Opener Samarth Singh remained not out on 50. Hridip Deka (2), Ranjit Mali (1) and Mukhtar Hussain (1) shared the wickets.

In the last group league match Assam will now face Vidarbha from March 3.
