The second edition of the Brahmaputra Volleyball League (BVL) got under way at Dharamtala in Bajali District on Sunday. Altogether 2200 players from 209 teams across the State are participating in the championship.

GUWAHATI: The second edition of the Brahmaputra Volleyball League (BVL) got under way at Dharamtala in Bajali District on Sunday. Altogether 2200 players from 209 teams across the State are participating in the championship.

The inaugural function was attended by former international volleyball player Shyam Sundar Rao, who is also the recipient of Arjuna and Dronacharya awards, along with local MLA and Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass, president of the Assam Volleyball Association Sushanta Biswa Sarma and former international volleyball player Abhijit Bhattacharya.

Addressing the gathering Abhijit, who is the key person behind the competition, said, "After the first edition of the meet we got huge response from the different parts of the state and it forced us to increase the number of teams this year. BVL is a competition through which we have planned to promote volleyball in Assam and I am optimistic about the success."

In a brief speech minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass said, "State government is working to develop sports in the state and several new ultra modern sports infrastructures will come up within a short period of time in different parts of the State. One such infrastructure will also be built in this locality and we will certainly reserve some space for volleyball there."

Rao in his speech termed the competition a good one to develop the game in Assam. He also gave some advice to the young players on how to improve the skill.
