ITANAGAR: Chief Minister Pema Khandu has reiterated that the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APFRA), 1978, is not to counter any religion but is a step towards conserving the rich indigenous cultural heritage of the state.

Addressing the Golden Jubilee Nyokum celebration in East Kameng district, he reiterated that the Act protects the distinctive traditions of different tribes and ensures that such festivals as Nyokum are celebrated in their original form and handed over to generations to come.  Khandu made it clear that the APFRA was functional since 1978 but had no adequate rules for its implementation.

The High Court has now ordered the state government to prepare the rules and assured no rule would be formulated in favor of or against any individual religion. He requested people not to get swayed by misconceptions regarding the Act, reaffirming that the government's aim is merely to protect the cultural identity of Indigenous people.

The Chief Minister also emphasized that the state has no intention to interfere with religion, as its practice is individual choice. According to him, the government wants to play the role of facilitator for development and improvement without any involvement. He underscored the social as well as collective responsibility of protecting the Indigenous community's traditional legacy.

The Chief Minister requested the organizations, the communities, as well as interested individuals who were seeking details regarding the Act, to visit Home Minister Mama Natung to provide them with appropriate information. Khandu also issued an open invitation to all stakeholders to share their concerns and suggestions on the Act.

He promised that their inputs would be given positive consideration while framing the rules so that a balanced and fair approach is adopted. His statement emphasizes the government's resolve to preserve culture while ensuring religious freedom for all citizens of Arunachal Pradesh.
